Another 22 people were injured, including six who were in critical condition, in the Dar-es-Salam area, the BBC reported.

The collapse occurred at about 2:00am local time after heavy overnight rain, according to a government statement. Significant resources and personnel, including military units, have been deployed to search for survivors.

A woman told local media that all five of her children had died in the disaster. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Rescuers were seen using excavators to search through piles of scattered rubbish at the site, while local residents gathered nearby.

Guinea’s Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the scene to assess the situation and oversee the rescue efforts.

Neighbourhood leader Lancine Sylla earlier told AFP that he feared the incident would result in a high number of casualties.

“We have pulled out 18 bodies that were taken to the morgue,” he said.
