Reuters reported that US forces targeted the two Iranian launchers on Sunday. A US official said the launchers were operated by the IRGC and were being prepared to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Central Command described the strikes as a “limited, precise” operation against Iranian forces that posed an “imminent threat” in the waterway.
The IRGC said several Iranian military personnel and civilians were killed or wounded in the US strikes but did not provide a specific casualty figure.
Hours later, the IRGC said it had launched ballistic missiles at the King Hussein and Al Azraq military bases in Jordan, which host US forces, in response to the US attack on Larak Island.
Jordan’s armed forces said its air-defence systems intercepted eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace.
The latest exchange marks the first known US military strikes on Iran since late July and represents a renewed direct military escalation between Washington and Tehran after several weeks of relative calm.
