According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, Putin made the remarks on Tuesday at the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. Welcoming Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s call for member countries to jointly counter unilateral sanctions, he said Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had played a very significant role in establishing the forum.

Putin urged members of the cooperation framework to counter unilateral Western sanctions against energy-producing countries, saying such measures had led to unfair competition.

Referring to the remarks by his Iranian counterpart, Putin said Pezeshkian’s comments about the negative impact of illegal sanctions on the energy sector were grounded in reality, as the measures had adverse consequences not only for consumers but also for producers.

Putin also stressed the need for countries around the world to adhere to environmental principles, while warning against the exploitation of these principles to serve the interests of particular countries.

In another part of his remarks, the Russian president said global demand for natural gas would reach 5.5 trillion cubic meters annually by 2050, while international supply would increase by around 1.5 times.

He noted that global gas consumption had grown by 1.2 percent in 2025 alone, reaching 4.2 trillion cubic meters.

Addressing European sanctions against Russia, Putin said Europe was harming its own industrial and social sectors by turning away from Russian energy supplies.

The eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum was held in Moscow on Tuesday, October 27, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and a number of other heads of state and senior officials from member and observer countries in attendance.
